What does a Respiratory Therapist do?

A Respiratory Therapist is a specialized healthcare practitioner who treats patients suffering from heart and lung conditions, managing life-support ventilators in ICUs and administering treatments to premature infants and the elderly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders, such as asthma, COPD, and pneumonia
  • Operate and manage life support equipment, including mechanical ventilators and artificial airways
  • Administer breathing treatments, aerosol medications, and medical gases
  • Perform diagnostic tests, including measuring lung capacity and drawing arterial blood gas (ABG)
  • Respond rapidly to medical emergencies, including code blues, cardiac arrests, and rapid intubations
  • Educate patients and families on how to use inhalers and breathing equipment at home

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Active state license as a Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP)
  • Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) or Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential
  • In-depth knowledge of cardiopulmonary physiology and critical care medicine
  • Ability to make rapid, life-saving decisions under intense pressure
  • High technical aptitude for operating complex life-support machinery

Preferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential strongly preferred
  • Current BLS, ACLS, PALS, and NRP certifications
  • Experience working in adult, pediatric, or neonatal intensive care units (ICUs/NICUs)
  • Familiarity with ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) management
  • Experience drawing and analyzing Arterial Blood Gases (ABGs)
  • Experience with Epic or Cerner charting systems

  • Salary Range: $70,000 - $95,000
